Once the place for the creation of racist and Lost Cause sculpture, Edward V. Valentine’s study is recontextualized with artifacts, corrective narratives, and a multimedia presentation to create an armature for historical storytelling and community learning.

The installation illuminates and challenges the false histories within sculptor Edward Valentine’s work by positioning Valentine’s sculptures behind a scrim, briefly illuminating them in tandem with a projected narrative; these layered projections ensure that the sculptures are inextricable from their context. Seven shelves, standing a total of sixteen feet high, host rows of statues and busts that flicker in and out of view as viewers are guided through the history of monuments and their meaning through archival imagery, historical timelines, and present-day situations.
